Discover the fascinating story of the Merton Priory Chapter House with a workshop led by historian John Hawks.

Four free 90-minute workshops have been scheduled over the summer for people to learn about the fascinating history of the archaeological remains.

Hidden under the A24, the Chapter House spans a rich medieval history, from the Coronation of Henry VI in 1437, to the 18th century, where they Abbey became a major centre for textile printing.

Mr Hawks, who is vice-chairman of the Merton Priory Trust, has been working at the Chapter House in Watermill Way for more than 20 years.

The workshops will also explore plans by social and environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London to create a new glass-walled museum on the site.

Nicky Judd, Groundwork project manager, said: "We are really excited to be delivering these workshops. The Chapter House is not very visible unless you know what you're looking for.

"These workshops will give local people the opportunity to discover the significance of the Chapter House and to learn about its rich history and the role it has played in the local community for hundreds of years."

Workshop dates:

- Sunday, July 19, 2pm

- Thursday, July 23, 7pm

- Wednesday, July 29, 11am

- Wednesday, August 5, 7pm
