Schoolchildren did not need a Tardis to travel back in time as they got a taste of the past at Ye Olde Summer Fayre.

The fayre at Singlegate Primary School in Colliers Wood celebrated the school’s fascinating history, with tales from children, their parents and even grandparents who were pupils there sharing their memories.

Among the highlights of the event on Saturday July 4, were a Great British Bake Off-style competition and a fancy dress parade.

Did you know that the London Borough of Merton was originally named Merton Singlegate or that the 'Singlegate boys' were immortalised in a song about the First World War?

And if you thought Carnaby Street was the only place to be seen in the 1950s and 60s, think again because some of the biggest names in show business at the time, such as actress Sylvia Syms were visitors to the school.

The event was organised by the Friends of Singlegate School to raise money for the school and could be used to pay for subsidised school trips and art materials.

Organiser of the event, Michelle Burns said: "We are very grateful to everyone who helped organise the event and everyone who came and made the day a great success."
