A ‘bridge to nowhere’ has been re-built and dedicated to a late councillor, whose family went to unveil it.

Mayor of Merton Councillor David Chung formally dedicated the bridge in Bewley Street, Colliers Wood, to the late Councillor Gam Gurung.

Work began on the bridge in March 2014 but it was worth the wait, as guests crowded round to watch a plaque being unveiled to honour the popular councillor.

Helping the mayor was Kabita Gurung, Coun Gurung’s widow, who said: "I am very proud of all that Gam achieved in his life, and dedicating this bridge to his memory is a wonderful honour for us."

Leader of the council Councillor Stephen Alambritis was also there with ward councillors and the president of the South London Nepalese Association and the Colliers Wood Chorus.

The infamous bridge was half-built in 2007 by Taylor Wimpey, now Wimpey Homes, but was never finished, until now.

Funding from Transport for London, The Wandle Valley Trust and transport charity Sustrans made the project possible.

The bridge joins Wandle Meadow Nature Park with Bewley Street.
