A new brewery is due to create its first batch of beer on Monday ahead of its official opening.

Entrepreneur Mark Gordon left his job in banking in 2013 to set up the Wimbledon Brewery, reviving an historic brand which went up in flames almost 130 years ago.

The first beer to leave the pumps will be the Common pale ale at 3.7 per cent - the first in a range of three core products designed to reflect the local area.

The original Wimbledon Brewery was a Tower Brewery - a five storey high building which is said to have used the latest technology before it burnt down in 1889.

Only a few bricks of it remain which have been worked into the current building which still sits opposite the Dog and Fox pub in Wimbledon Village.

Neighbours of the new micro-brewery by the Tandem Centre in Colliers Wood have reported the sweet smell of the brewing process drifting from the premises this week.

An official opening event has been scheduled for September.
