Judy Garland's daughter, Lorna Luft, will sing her mother's most famous songs in a new show appearing in Wimbledon next month.

The Songbook of Judy Garland features never-before-seen film clips and interviews and classic hits including Over the Rainbow, I Got Rhythm and The Trolley Song.

Appearing alongside Luft will be a host of leading musical theatre stars, including Darren Bennett [Dirty Rotten Scoundrels], Rachel Stanley [Chitty Chitty Bang Bang] and Louise Dearman [Wicked].

Wimbledon Times:

"We are all ourselves recreating these songs and definitely making them our own", says Dearman, 39, making time for a brief phone interview in a taxi on her way to the King's Lynn Corn Exchange in Norfolk where the cast are performing this week.

"Nobody's trying to impersonate Judy, we wouldn't dare."

Which is perhaps not surprising, given that they are starring alongside her daughter, who wanted the show to be a celebration of Garland's music.

Most famous for her role as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Garland's four-decade career as a singer and actress ended tragically, when she died of an accidental overdose at the age of 47.

"Lorna definitely didn't want people to focus on that because she says she had lots of tragedies in her life but she was not tragic", says Dearman.

"She was a wonderful, fun person to be around and she was a great mum. That's what all the people like Grace Kelly said about her."

The concert features classic Judy Garland songs set against archive footage from films, interviews and concerts.

Joining the West End cast is singer-songwriter and X-Factor star, Ray Quinn, who features in live performances of songs from unforgettable movies including Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis and Easter Parade.

Also appearing are Judy’s dancers, The Boyfriends - named after Judy’s original dancers of the same name.

Showbiz royalty in her own right Lorna Luft, the half-sister of Liza Minnelli, will also share stories of her mother on the night.

"She's been wonderful", says Dearman. "She's always been very open with us, she's such good fun. She really pulls the company together and makes sure we are sociable after the shows and the audience absolutely love her."
