With just a day to go until Merton goes to the polls, here are some essential details you need to know for election day.

On Thursday, May 7, voters in Wimbledon and Mitcham & Morden will be electing its MP for the next five years on the same day as the nation decides who it wants the next government to be.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm tomorrow.

Poll cards will have been sent to the address where you are registered, stating where your polling station is.

You can only vote at the polling station stated on your own poll card.

You do not have to bring your polling card with you.

Postal votes must be returned by 10pm on Thursday.

If you have not had time to post it before polling day, you can take it to the polling station on polling day and hand it in. Your poll card tells you where your polling station is. Postal votes which arrive after 10pm will not be counted.

If you have appointed a proxy, to vote on your behalf, they must make sure they are able to vote at the correct polling station.

If you are suddenly unable to vote in person on the day, for example if you have a medical emergency, you can apply for an emergency proxy up until 5pm on polling day.

You should contact your local electoral registration office directly to ask about this.

You can take your poll card with you to show the polling station staff when you arrive.

If you do not have it with you, tell the polling station staff your name and your address and they can check whether you are on the electoral register.

Staff at the polling station will give you a ballot paper listing the candidates you can vote for.
