Friends of a former Merton councillor who died from ovarian cancer are hosting a charity ball in her memory.

Honorary alderman Jan Jones served as a Conservative councillor in Lower Morden for two decades, from 1982 to 2002.

She died in Australia in October and is survived by her husband, Honorary alderman Allan Jones, who is also a former Merton councillor and mayor.

A gala ball to raise money for Target Ovarian Cancer will be held at the All England Tennis Club on Saturday, August 1.

Guests will be treated to a three-course meal and entertainment by West End singer Nadim Naaman and the Diamond Skyline Orchestra.

Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender, who is part of the organising team, said: "I think it's going to be a fab evening.

"I'm sure everyone will enjoy themselves and I hope we can raise lots of money for charity."

Organisers are hoping to attract more than 250 people to the ball, with individual tickets going for £75 or £700 for a table of 10.

There will also be lots of prizes on offer at a live auction and a silent auction.

Seven thousand woman every year are diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Some of the primary work of Target Ovarian Cancer involves raising awareness about the symptoms of the cancer.
