Aspirational caravan-dwellers appear to have bagged "the cheapest view of Wimbledon Common" after pitching up in the borough's most affluent housing location.

Four caravans, including a luxury motorhome with CCTV, have been parked in the Causeway for the past month - a small road overlooking Wimbledon Common where nearby houses have sold for £16m in recent years.

It is not known who is living in the caravans, but a Radio Jackie sticker on one vehicle, which also had a bucket of Wood Coating and a Dunlop tennis ball in the front seat, suggested it might occupied by a handyman.

One of the smaller caravans sported the England flag, and another van contained an empty Tesco bacon and cheese sandwich wrapper.

A Transit minibus, also parked in the road, had an unpaid parking penalty notice in the front windscreen and a hand-written note from the Met police attached to the windscreen wipers asking the owner to contact officers.

Wimbledon Times:

A Merton Council spokeswoman said the council is working with police "to resolve the situation as soon as possible".

There is free parking in the road, which is regularly used by dog walkers.

The council has previously proposed putting parking meters in the street, and making it a Controlled Parking Zone - but this was opposed by the Wimbledon Common West Residents' Association.

Edward Foley, owner of Winkworth Estate Agency in Wimbledon Village, said some houses overlooking the common will sell for £1,200 per sq ft, giving the motorhome owners "the cheapest view of Wimbledon Common".

Wimbledon Times:

A Wimbledon Common Conservators spokeswoman said the conservators are powerless to evict the travellers, but said she believed people are "not very happy" about their arrival.

Wimbledon Times:

The caravans were vandalised with black and green graffiti at the beginning of the month. But the graffiti has since been scrubbed off.
