An inspiring young student will help build a school in an Indian community after being chosen as one of just 30 from across the UK to join a volunteer trip this summer.

Rutlish School student Kieran Fitzpatrick, 15, was chosen as one of just 30 school children nationwide for a place on the Virgin Atlantic Be the Change volunteer trip taking place in August.

To win the scholarship Mr Fitzpatrick, who lives on the Phipps Bridge Estate in Mitcham, had to pass a lengthy application process demonstrating both leadership skills and how he helps out in his community.

The dedicated youngster volunteers at the Donald Hope Library in Colliers Wood on Saturdays, helps out at the Phipps Bridge Youth Club, and finds time to referee hockey matches for primary school children.

Hockey enthusiast Mr Fitzpatrick said: "I was stunned when I found out I had received the scholarship and it still hasn’t quite sunk in yet!"

"It is amazing that I will get the chance to help people out who have less than us."

His proud mother Sarah Grimshaw said: "I’m still in total shock. It is an opportunity we never would have been able to afford to give otherwise."

A delighted Ms Grimshaw continued: "He comes from a council estate so to be chosen as one of just 30 students for this is a massive achievement. It will really do him good to see another part of the world."

Mr Fitzpatrick believes it will be a valuable experience as when he grows up he is keen on working with children either as a PE teacher or perhaps a youth worker.

Speaking about what drives him to dedicate so much time to helping out in the community, the youngster said: "I’m not sure really, I guess I’ve seen people suffer and want to help make a change."

He will join 29 other young people aged 12 to18 years-old to travel to one of the charity’s Adopt a Village communities in Rajasthan, India.

On the trip the volunteers will experience the culture, history and way of life of Indian people, volunteer in a rural village, helping build a school or a well and participate in interactive workshops to explore global issues.

The 2015 trip to India will take place between August 4 and 22.
