March 25: Costa Coffee bids for branch opposite South Wimbledon StationÂ
Fifty-two per cent of voters were opposed to Costa's arrival, compared to 48 per cent who said they wanted to see a branch open in their community.
Mario Jashari, who runs independent cafe Coffee Bay inside south Wimbledon Station, has already received 50 signatures for his petition calling on Merton Council to oppose Costa's arrival.
He said he will continue to gather signatures before submitting the petition to the council later this week.
Costa is hoping to open a 28-seater cafe next to Tesco Express on the ground floor of what is listed as the Grove Hotel in Morden Road.
