Children and staff welcomed special guests to their school as part of a launch day.

The team at Harris Primary Academy Merton formally celebrated the school’s opening last Tuesday following the take-over in September.

Lord Harris of Peckham, the sponsor of the Harris Federation, along with chief executive Sir Dan Moynihan, officially opened the school, formerly Garden Primary School in Abbotts Road, Mitcham.

Garden Primary had been put in special measures by Ofsted.

Guests toured the Academy and were greeted by pupils eager to show off the work in their exercise books as well as the colourful displays around the school.

Visitors were unanimous in their praise of the enthusiasm and politeness of the school’s children.

Victoria Forbes, principal of Harris Primary Academy Merton, said: "We are delighted to now be part of the Harris Family, and look forward to supporting children through their primary education for many years to come."

Sir Dan Moynihan, chief executive of the Harris Federation, said at the event on Tuesday, March 24: "Today was a great way to formally open Harris Primary Academy Merton.

"Anyone visiting this school can see that it is offering a happy and safe education to its children, who are producing some excellent work. We are excited to support pupils and staff alike as the school continues to improve."
