An elderly man robbed of £200 in cash while doing his weekly shop is recovering in hospital with a fractured hip.

The 85 year-old man had been shopping in Mitcham town centre on Tuesday afternoon when he was approached by a man in the street who pushed him to the ground and stole the money, police said.

The pensioner is still in hospital with a fractured hip after he was approached from behind by a suspect at 3.30pm in Sunshine Way, Mitcham, on Tuesday.

The victim had been into Lloyds Bank in Majestic Way and withdrew the £200 cash before putting it in his pocket, a police spokeswoman said.

As he left the bank and walked along the road, he was pushed to the ground.

Police and paramedics were called and the man was taken to a south London hospital where he remains today.

Officers from the robbery squad at Merton police station are investigating and want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time.

Detective Inspector Dan O’Sullivan, from Merton CID, said: "We would urge anyone who was out shopping in Mitcham town centre on Tuesday and saw what happened to get in touch with us.

"The victim has been left extremely shaken up by the incident and he's sustained a serious injury to his hip. If anybody has any information about the suspect involved then we want to hear from you."
