Five Guys has moved into the space once occupied by Casa Nostra and it is already doing a roaring trade.

The team shifted 62,000 burgers in the first week – which is not bad.

The American ‘fast casual’ chain enjoyed by Barack Obama himself, will fit right into The Broadway with its mix of retail and food outlets drawing people in again and again.

Its bright red and white sign draws the eye in and its fresh, American diner style complete with cosy booths add to the look.

Wimbledon Times:

It looks like organised chaos in the preparation area which is fully exposed to the waiting customers. You order your burger and extras at the till and receive a ticket to wait for your order to be made before your eyes.

This led to a messy waiting area-come-queue as people waited and poured their own drinks from huge dispensers with free refills.

The burgers were tasty and filling, with plenty of fillings to choose from and a generous portion of skin-on chips to go with them.

There were lots of options for toppings, including pickles, lettuce and grilled onions, and sauces including mayonnaise and hot sauce all to be chosen at the till.

However for vegetarians there were scant offerings, with two types of veggie sandwiches and a grilled cheese for £3.75 and no vegetarian burgers or hot dogs in sight.

If you have a nut allergy or would prefer Halal meat, I would not recommend going to Five Guys.

Huge bags of peanuts sit stacked up along the wall, with open pots of nuts ready for anyone to grab on their way past.

All chips are cooked in 100 per cent peanut oil.

On its website it says over the last 20 years peanuts have become part of the company’s identity and it does not want to disappoint its peanut-loving guests.

A manager at the new Wimbledon store, which opened at the beginning of the month, said customers can request Halal meat but it would be cooked on the same grill as the other patties.

It was a tasty and filling meal but I am not sure it is a favourite of mine, especially with Gourmet Burger Kitchen and the Hot Pink Grill a few doors down.

However, it does what it says on the tin.
