A primary school was transformed into a circus big top as part of a reward for pupils.

Children at Poplar Primary School, Morden, explored picture book Leon and the Place Between and the following week, found their classrooms had become the circus.

The smell of popcorn filled the corridors and tickets were needed for entry to classrooms.

Each class took part in literacy based activities around the picture book and to culminate the week, children came to school dressed as circus characters and enjoyed circus skills workshops.

Katharine Davies, headteacher, said: “We wanted to give the children a special treat as they have had to be so patient during the school expansion programme.

“The surprise on the children’s faces when they arrived at school was a joy to behold.”
