A 25-year-old man who smashed his Silver Golf into a cab ferrying a woman and her children has admitted assaulting a passenger in his car.

Lucas Francis, of Coulsdon, was speeding down Seddon Road in Morden on Sunday, June 8 last year, when he crashed into a minicab carrying a woman and two young children.

Appearing in Kingston Crown Court last week he also admitted assaulting 22-year-old Lena McDonagh in Bishopford Road, Morden during the same incident.

She was a passenger in his silver VW Golf when it crashed into the minicab.

The Crown Prosecution Service said that he had admitted a common assault in relation to an injury caused to her when she was dragged out of the car.

Paramedics treated five people for minor injuries after the crash, taking three of them to St Helier Hospital in Sutton.

The day after the crash, Seddon Road residents told the Wimbledon Guardian they heard Francis' car speeding towards Bishopsford Road just before it smashed into the minicab. 

Anna Mann, whose house in Hillfield Avenue is just behind the scene of the crash, said : "I heard a bang at about 12 o’clock.

"I came round and there was one car in front of the other. The police were there and they were seeing to it."

Francis pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in September.

Francis was first charged with attempted murder in relation to the assault on Ms McDonagh, but the offence was later changed to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He denied attempted murder in September, but last week admitted a less serious offence of common assault.

Francis, of Grove Lane, is a father who is understood to work for BT.

He is due to be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, April 17.
