Youngsters all over the country dressed up as their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day yesterday.

Primary schools and nurseries across Merton welcomed Harry Potters, Little Red Riding Hoods and even Sachin Tendulkar from the cricketer’s autobiography through their doors.

Not to be left out, staff members donned costumes ranging from Babar the elephant to Wally from Where’s Wally? At Playdays Nursery in Queens Road, Wimbledon, youngsters came in dressed as fairies, pirates and superheroes.

Six-year-old Reece Ball’s mother sent in a picture of her son dressed as Harry Potter before he left for Liberty Primary School in Mitcham.
