Merton Council repeatedly dishes out fines of up to £110 to drivers who park in disabled bays without a permit.

So it appeared to be a case of one rule for us and another for you when this council truck was spotted taking up two disabled bays opposite Homebase in south Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon.

A police worker from Phipps Bridge, who does not want to be named, said: "Nice to see Merton council staff care where they park. In disabled bays!"

The man, whose partner is disabled, said: "It's always hard to find spaces and then you see a council van taking up two spaces. I was a bit shocked to say the least."

Parking officers in Merton can issue charges of between £60 and £110 to people who park in spaces without the necessary permit. If paid within 14 days, the fine is discounted by 50 per cent.

Councillor Judy Saunders, cabinet member for environmental cleanliness and parking, said: "We make it clear to staff that parking in disabled bays is not acceptable, so we will look into this and take the necessary action."
