Aggresive dogs are believed to have been responsible for up to £10,000 worth of damage to trees in Merton parks in the past few weeks - with one tree completely destroyed.

Four trees in Green Walk and Nelson Gardens in south Wimbledon were discovered with aggressive gnawing and bite marks on their trunks last week.

Another tree was found completely destroyed.

Workers from the council's greenspaces team suspect the damage was caused by dogs.

Councillor Andrew Judge, cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration said: "We plant trees around the borough to help remove pollutants from the air, and to keep Merton looking beautiful as well as providing many other benefits to wildlife and our health and wellbeing.

"It’s terrible that these trees have been harmed in this way and we urge dog owners to be responsible for their pets. Please get in touch if you see a tree being damaged.’
