Merton Dementia Hub has received a glowing endorsement after being nominated for two awards at the upcoming Local Government Chronicle awards.

The Hub in Whitford Gardens, Mitcham, which only opened its doors in July last year, is the first of its kind in London.

It was praised by broadcaster John Humphrys on national radio when he visited last year.

The nod came as part of an interview with service users on Radio 4’s Today programme, broadcast in two parts last summer.

Managed by the Alzheimer’s Society, it allows people at all stages of dementia access to different health and social care professionals.

Lorraine Bridger, the Hub’s dementia support manager, said: "We’ve got so many great facilities under one roof, and everything from the colour scheme down to the furniture was chosen with patients in mind."

"I believe there will be more of these centres popping up across the country in the near future. We’ve already had a number of visitors admiring the work we’ve done here."

Merton Council has been nominated in two other categories including the innovation award for its hoarding protocol. This service looks at practical solutions through a multi-agency approach for people who hoard.

Since its introduction in 2013, 25 customers have been supported, meaning they can now enjoy a better quality of life in their own home, as well as reducing the cost to the public purse.

The fourth nomination is in the business transformation category and recognises the council’s work preventing homelessness.

Leader of the council, Councillor Stephen Alambritis said: "I am immensely proud that Merton has been shortlisted in these well regarded national local government awards.

"This is the first time Merton has been shortlisted four times in one awards ceremony, an achievement that reflects the business-like approach we have taken in running our services.

"Despite the very serious financial challenges facing the council, we have continued to serve and support those who are most vulnerable in our community ensuring they have a better quality of life, and in some cases, in a way that very few local authorities in the country have been able to do."

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday, March 11.
