A doctor’s surgery has gone on the market for just under £2million despite a campaign to try and save it.

Whoever buys the Edwardian Vineyard Hill Road Surgery will have to convert the building, because it is currently a functioning surgery but has planning permission to be turned into a home.

The surgery is due to close its doors in March despite a campaign by high profile neighbours including Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond and Merton Conservatives leader Oonagh Moulton.

Wimbledon Times:

Winkworth Wimbledon Village has the semi-detached property on its books as of today for £1.85million.

Winkworth Wimbledon Village owner Edward Foley said it has the potential to be a six bedroomed family home.

Mr Foley said: "It is a great opportunity for a family project."

The three storey surgery is closing after 40 years because partners Dr Gill Provost and Dr Rob Jones are hanging up their stethoscopes for the final time.

The 5,500 patients will have to find a new practice because the doctors, who own the building in Vineyard Hill Road, have already been given planning permission by Merton Council in September 2013 to convert the surgery into a residential property.

The surgery in the Wimbledon Park area offers off-street parking for two cars at the front, and a 106ft west facing garden and just over 2,600sq ft of space inside.

It had been listed with Savills for the same price but failed to attract a successful buyer.

An NHS England (London) spokesperson said: "We have been given notice by the two PMS contract holders at Vineyard Hill Surgery that they wish to retire and revert the premises to residential use as of March 2015.

"We are currently carrying out an engagement programme with patients at the surgery to look at future options for them to access primary care.

"During this time we will listen to the views of patients and local residents, as well as reviewing existing GP services in the area and the health needs of the local community."
