A bank robber threatened to set off a 'bomb' near Morden Station before making off with "thousands of pounds".

The lone robber, described as a "dishevelled" white man in his 50s, entered the Nationwide in London Road with a package tied to his waist on Friday afternoon.

From Friday: Bank robbers raid Morden bank

A lorry driver from Carshalton, who entered the branch as the robbery was taking place, said: "He said he had a bomb on him...He was grabbing money from a lady who bagged it.

"He said give me the f****** money and then walked out."

"The lady behind the counter was very shocked."

Asked how much money the robber got away with, the lorry driver said: "They were talking a few grand...It wasn't a fortune."

The robber entered the shop at about 1.45pm, threatened staff and quickly made off with the cash in a semi-transparent plastic shopping bag.

He was described as slim, with short dark grey hear and was wearing dark clothing and a white baseball cap.

He left the bank via the main entrance, turning left and heading towards Morden Road and Kenley Road.

Armed police descended on the bank just before 2pm but the robber had already fled.

Detective Constable Marlon Pinto from the Flying Squad, who is leading the investigation, said: "We'd like to hear from anyone in the Morden area who may have seen this person, either before or after the robbery on Friday to get in touch with us.

"He was wearing quite a distinctive white baseball cap, so I would urge anyone with information to call police or Crimestoppers, which is completely anonymous."

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information should call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
