A contractor has been appointed for the latest phase of the expansion of a primary school.

Merton Council awarded builders Kind and Company the second and final phase contract for the Dundonald Primary School expansion this week.

Kind and Company are set to start work on the controversial site in March, when the first phase external works will have been completed.

Contractors will replace the old pavilion in the park with a new two-story building which will include modern changing facilities and a hall to let for community groups and local sports clubs.

There will also be extra classrooms including a new school hall to accommodate children at the school which has seen campaigners attempt to block the expansion with a number of legal challenges.

Kind and Company will also manage the final external works to complete three tennis courts, an enlarged children’s public playground, and green gym, the council said.

A spokesman said providing more school places at Dundonald Primary School is part of the council’s £80m borough-wide investment in expanding Merton’s top schools so more children can be educated near to where they live.

It has a commitment to provide 2,000 more school places over the next four years.

Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Martin Whelton said: “This is a very exciting phase in our work to provide more children living in the area the opportunity to be educated at an outstanding school.

“We are facing unprecedented numbers of children living in Merton and we are committed to offering as many of them as possible the chance to benefit from an excellent education near to where they live.

“Last year we were only able to offer places to pupils living within 106 meters of Dundonald Primary School and when this work is completed, we will be able to offer this opportunity to many more local children.”
