Jane Slater, 68, of Stuart Road, Wimbledon Park, said: “It's an awful idea. If AFC Wimbledon get more and more popular, that area will be devastated. The greyhound people take a lot of care with the flooding.”

When contacted separately by the Wimbledon Guardian, Paschal Taggart, the businessman behind rival plans for a new multi-million pound greyhound stadium on the site, welcomed the plans being submitted.

He said: “It is great that Galliard’s plans are now submitted.”

Mr Taggart, who has said he will not submit his own proposal to Merton Council for consideration, raised concerns about the consultation period falling over Christmas and New Year.

The Irishman said: “In Ireland any planning time limits exclude ten days for Christmas holidays.

“At first glance I see no solution to the one in 20 flood plain problem. However, I will await the report by the residents’ technical advisors.

“The transport difficulties appear to me to be increased substantially but here again I will await the expert’s assessment.”

He added: “At the end of the day the final decision rests with Merton planning authorities and eventually with the Mayor.

“If Galliard Homes get its planning permission then the very best of luck to AFC Wimbledon in the future.”
