A primary school is on a winning streak with two gold awards and thousands of pounds in recycling prizes.

Children and staff at Dundonald Primary School in Wimbledon are celebrating its second gold sustainable travel award from Transport for London (TfL) and a Gold Sportsmark from the Merton Schools Sports Partnership.

The mayor of Merton Councillor Agatha Akyigyina visited the school in Dundonald Road on Friday, November 21, to congratulate pupils and staff on their success.

The Sustainable Travel award recognises the school’s work on promoting active, environmentally-friendly and safe travel to and from school through TfL’s Stars accreditation scheme.

In addition to the two golds, the school has also won £3,000 as part of Merton Council’s Mega Recycle initiative having gained 212 nominations from residents.

As part of the Mega Recycle, the school has encouraged many people to recycle as much as possible. All this in a week when the school was also ranked amongst England’s top three per cent state primary schools in the Sunday Times top 500 list.

Headteacher Fiona Duffy said: "I’m proud of the children.

"It is because of them, and because of our dedicated staff and governors, that we have won these awards.

"As a school we believe we play an important role in the community and we also believe in working with our children to develop good habits early on in life so they grow into well-rounded, environmentally conscious adults.

"To see ourselves in the Sunday Times’ top 500 too has really made this a great week for us.”
