A Royal British Legion club has received a timely makeover as part of a multi-million pound town centre regeneration project.

The refurbishment at the Mitcham Poppy Club on the anniversary of the start of the First World War highlights the wider improvements taking place across the town.

The club is an important part of the community, with veterans and families of serving soldiers attending social events there.

Ian Halliday from the Poppy Club said: "It’s great to see the place looking so good now.

"Lots of our members really appreciate this as a place to come and meet other people and catch up - it’s nice to see the club spruced up."

Councillor Andrew Judge said how appropriate it is to provide the Poppy Club with a refurbished club building in the centenary year of the First World War.

The cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration emphasised the importance of giving back to those who raise money for the armed forces.

The council's £6.2 million Mitcham Regeneration Project is aimed at making Mitcham a better place to spend time.

Buildings will be spruced up and business support and community cohesion will play an integral role.

Coun Andrew Judge said the investment in the town centre demonstrates the council’s commitment to its economic prosperity as well as the town’s social scene.

He said: "This is just the beginning of improvements we’re making to Mitcham."
