The new chair of governors at a primary school where the headteacher and former chair left suddenly has spoken out.

Rob Gray, the new chairman of Garfield Primary School’s board of governors said their priority was to ensure there was no disruption for children, and an interim headteacher was being appointed.

The Wimbledon Guardian reported worried parents were demanding answers after the mystery departure of headteacher Yvonne Norman just days after its chair of governors Amanda Stuart Fisher resigned following an emergency meeting with the council.

Wimbledon Times:

Parents only found out about her departure last Friday in a letter signed by Mr Gray, who told them he had stepped in as the new chair of governors after Ms Stuart Fisher decided not to run for re-election.

Worried parents demand answers after sudden departure of headteacher and chair of governors at Garfield Primary School

In a statement Mr Gray said: "Our main priority is to ensure there is absolutely no disruption to the pupils who continue to enjoy a good standard of education in a safe, friendly environment.

"Therefore these matters are being dealt with by the governors. An interim headteacher is being appointed to maintain the smooth day-to-day running of this popular community school."

An Ofsted inspection is due to take place at the Garfield Road school in Wimbledon imminently.

Its last inspection in 2010 rated the school, which has 316 pupils aged three to 11-years-old, as ‘good,’ which means it is serving its pupils well.

It is a grade below ‘outstanding.’
