Dundonald Rec campaigners held a meeting with a Government minister on Monday in a bid to reverse a council decision to allow building work at a school.

Merton Council has staunchly defended its decision to expand Dundonald Primary School and refurbish facilities in the neighbouring park for residents, stating the campaigners' latest move was without substance.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond joined campaigners at the House of Commons to present what they called ‘robust and unambiguous’ evidence to secretary of state Eric Pickles.

Among the group was Lorraine Marries, the chairman of Protect Dundonald Rec, who said false information was provided to decision makers by the council to secure planning permission to build on the land in Dundonald Road, Wimbledon.

Councillor Martin Whelton, cabinet member for education said today: "This is without any substance.

"We have been given the go-ahead at every stage and this has already been to the High Court.

"We absolutely refute the claims in their letter."

But Ms Maries said: "Eric Pickles has promised to consider this matter in great detail. We have provided the minister with evidence proving that the application was based on misrepresentation and false information.

"The way in which politicians and officers in the council have deceived statutory authorities, their own colleagues and the public is reprehensible.

"The evidence we have provided to the minister is robust and unambiguous.

"There is a clear case for revoking the planning permission."

Coun Whelton added the council was confident there was no basis for the latest claims and it was a shame those involved did not want to see improved facilities in the park. Work has already started on the controversial school and Coun Whelton said a new multi-use games pitch and tennis courts would be open in the spring.

Mr Hammond was joined by representatives from the Friends of Dundonald Park, the Protect Dundonald Rec Campaign Group, the Dundonald Rec Tennis and Sports Committee.
