Angry residents fed up with the state of a "dangerous" footbridge are calling on Network Rail to make repairs.

The Wimbledon footbridge runs from Merton Hall Road across the tracks to Elm Grove.

Anthony Fairclough, neighbourhood watch co-ordinator, said: "In April I noticed a number of the steps on the bridge had become loose and dangerous, easy to trip on or slip down - and reported them to Network Rail straight away.

"I imagined that the risk of injury would make them fix it quickly. Sadly I was wrong, and reminding them since has received no helpful response or action."

He said he has also reported concerns about poor lighting on the bridge and litter in the area.

Residents are now calling on Network Rail to bring the bridge up to a safe standard as soon as possible - and to make temporary repairs on the loose steps straight away.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "It's great that people have got involved and we appreciate their taking the time to contact us.

"Our structures team have been down to the bridge and assessed the work that needs to be done, including improving the treads.

"The work has been added to the work bank and will be prioritised appropriately."
