A football match turned nasty after a player lost his temper and allegedly punched another player in the face.

Police are investigating the alleged assault on a 19-year-old man during an amateur football match at the Joseph Hood Recreation Ground.

The incident took place during at a game played by Merton Football Club on Saturday, October 11.

A club spokesman said the incident did not involve one of their players, but someone who wanted to join.

He said they would not be inviting him back.

The other player was taken to hospital for treatment and reported it to police a couple of days later on Tuesday, October 14.

Detectives from Merton CID are investigating and no arrests have been made, police said.
