Travellers kicked off Cannon Hill Common by police and council officers last weekend have now set up camp in Morden Park.

The troupe of 15 caravans were served an enforcement notice by police and left Cannon Hill on Saturday evening, only to pitch up down the road.

Councillor Sally Kenny, of Lower Morden, said: "I’m impressed the police and council officers were able to move the travellers on from Cannon Hill Common so quickly but I’m disappointed they’ve now moved to Morden Park.

"The council is working closely with the police to remove them and to ensure the travellers stay out of all of our parks."

Residents and Conservative councillors criticised Merton Council for failing to secure Cannon Hill Common against illegal campers after logs installed around the park's borders were shifted by travellers last week.

Speaking today, Coun Kenny said: "It’s not always easy to protect open spaces from illegal encampments, but we’ll be speaking to residents to get their ideas about what the council can do to protect Morden Park in the future."

Cannon Hill ward councillors have announced they will hold a public meeting at a date to be decided, to discuss how they can improve security on Cannon Hill Common in Morden.
