Two young musicians have been awarded scholarships to help them develop their skills in the latest round of awards presented by the Mayor of London's Music Fund at City Hall.

Trumpeter Beau Davis, nine, from Joseph Hood Primary School and flautist Julia Taopa, 10, from William Morris Primary School were amongst 70 young people across all of London’s 32 boroughs to be awarded this year’s scholarships worth £280,000.

They will enable each child to be given an extensive programme of music tuition and support that they may not otherwise be able to afford.

As Mayor's Music Scholars, the young students get two hours of learning, music-making and other developmental activities every week, plus lots of opportunities to perform and to attend concerts and live gigs.

The children get a personal mentor, who is the link between the child and parent, school, music service and the music fund.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Not every child can afford an instrument or the lessons they need to make real progress as musicians and the Music Fund is doing vital work to help hundreds of gifted youngsters towards realising their ambitions and achieve their full potential."

The youngsters were presented with the scholarships on Thursday, September 25 at City Hall by James Rhodes, a concert pianist and TV presenter.
