Two trees worth hundreds of pounds have been removed after they were vandalised yesterday.
Merton Council is appealing for information after two Mountain Ash trees in Church Road, Mitcham, were so badly damaged they have to be up-rooted and replaced.
The cost of replacing each tree is £550, the council said.
They were removed by the council yesterday.
A Merton Council spokeswoman said: “We grow street trees around the borough to help remove pollutants from the air and to keep Merton looking beautiful.
“It’s terrible that these trees have been vandalised and replacing one can cost up to £550.
“Please get in touch if you see anyone vandalising a tree on your street.”
