Adults and teenagers who read six books as part of a summer reading scheme have received certificates from the mayor.

They had been taking part in the Six Books Challenge, an initiative held across seven libraries in Merton.

A total of 109 participants aged over 16-years-old regularly visited their local libraries to develop their reading skills in English.

Those who completed the challenge were awarded certificates by the mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina. An awards ceremony was held at Mitcham library at the end of the challenge, which was aimed at improving people’s literacy skills.

Coun Akyigyina said: "A huge congratulations to everyone who completed the challenge.

"Reading is a great pastime and I’m delighted to see so many adults signing up to become more confident readers."

Merton Council’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper, said: "Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Six Book Challenge this year, particularly those who completed the challenge."

Anyone that wants to sign up to the next challenge, starting in January next year, can do so by visiting their local library or visiting the website.
