Twenty firefighters are battling a blaze at a primary school this afternoon.

Four fire engines were sent to Joseph Hood Primary School, in Whatley Avenue, Wimbledon Chase, just after 12.30pm today, August 7.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "Round about 50 per cent of the kitchen on the ground floor is alight in a school building.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

"There are no reports of any injuries at present."

The school opened a new £5m wing in February last year, which allowed it to double in size from 210 students to 420.

It is not yet known whether the fire was in this block, which includes a kitchen.
