Commuters passing through Wimbledon Station can expect delays and cancellations until midday after a woman was hit by a train.

London Ambulance Service was called to the scene just before 9am, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

British Transport Police (BTP) and paramedics are currently in attendance after evacuating commuters from platform six.

A BTP spokesman said the incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

Officers have not yet identified the woman.

Metropolitan Police officers also attended, parking several cars outside the station and diverting traffic away from the busy road.

Melanie Nunzet, who came into Wimbledon by tram, said: "In front of the station there were about eight police cars and vans, blocking the traffic, making Monday morning driving in Wimbledon even worse than usual."

Danny Colligan tweeted: "Stuck on the train for 40 minutes so far due to a fatality at the Wimbledon station. If anyone is travelling this mornin keep this in mind."

South West Trains said they are now able to call at all platforms, but cancellations and delays of up to sixty minutes on some lines can be expected until midday.

TfL said there is now a good service on the District Line between Wimbledon and Earl's Court.
