Dozens of youngsters battled it out to become the bowls champion in an inter-schools tournament.

Children from four Merton primary schools went head-to-head with guidance from experienced bowls coaches, with Wimbledon Park Primary emerging victorious.

A month of preparation and training from coaches at Mitcham, Merton, Merton Park and Wimbledon Park bowls clubs set the players up well, and they enjoyed the final of the tournament on Monday, June 23.

The tournament was held at Merton Park Bowls Club, with children from Cranmer, Joseph Hood, Poplar and Wimbledon Park primary schools taking part.

A spokesperson from the club said the children’s behaviour and enthusiasm were exemplary.

Deputy mayor of Merton, Councillor Laxmi Attawar, who presented the awards, said: "It’s fantastic to see how enthusiastic the schoolchildren of Merton are about bowls.

"They’ve shown that bowls is a sport that is suitable for all age groups.

"I’d like to congratulate all the pupils who took part in the schools’ tournament as well as the trainers at each of Merton’s bowls clubs who’ve worked hard to encourage young people to take up bowls as a hobby."
