Young people in Merton can get sporty this summer after a cash boost from the National Lottery.

American football, BMX and netball are among the sports on offer as organisers work out how to spend £120,000 on Sports Blast, a new programme for youngsters aged 14 to 25-years-old.

Times and venues of the sessions are to be confirmed, but Merton Council is working with a number of partners to get young people to be more active.

Schemes will be open to people in the east of the borough and is one of 88 projects to receive a share of £15m of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.

The funding will allow Sports Blast to grow and offer more regular sessions over the next year with participants recruited as coaches and offered opportunities to gain qualifications.

The Sports Blast project has been set up by the council, in partnership with Circle Housing Merton Priory, Fulham Football Club, Surrey Tennis, Tooting and Mitcham United, England Netball, Merton BMX, Moat and YMCA London South West.
