Days after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in Pollards Hill, residents say they are saddened but not surprised by the return of violent crime following an apparent decline in recent years.

Police were called to Carisbrooke Road, at the junction with South Lodge Avenue at about 5.15pm on Monday evening to reports of a stabbing.

Two other teenagers had been robbed at the scene, on the corner of a residential road near the New Horizon Centre.

Juliet Adeluwoye, of 34 Carisbrooke Road, said: "It's very scary. I have lived here for 27 years but when it comes to crime it's not a good place."

Police arrested a 14-year-old girl from Streatham on suspicion of robbery following the incident.

Andy Hodge, operations manager at the New Horizon Centre who has lived in Pollards Hill for most of this life, said: "We have had a few stabbings. We had one here in 2011 and there was one outside the centre but back in the sixties that was common and it's got less and less which is good.

"It's not gang related. I think it comes in waves. It tends to be in summer because they are outdoors, they have got the booze.

"You talk to the people who live here and they say well that's Pollards and you say, well it doesn't have to be."

Residents on Carisbrooke Road said they have not been informed by police about the details of what happened.

Bill Blythe, of 95 Carisbrooke Road, said: "The police came round here but we didn't see anything. We just saw them taking two black men away in hand-cuffs and one was a girl, she was tiny."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn't see what happened but I was home and I heard it all kicking off. All I know is that it was young lads who apparently stabbed a little Asian boy."

Cheryl Giddy, family support worker at the New Horizon Centre, said: "It's shocking but round here you sort of expect it. It's just been building up the past month with boys around."
