Residents have objected to a pre-fabricated, floral block of 100 student flats which they said looks like something out of a film.

The proposed block of flats on the corner of Milner Road and Morden Road, opposite South Wimbledon Station, will be covered in a living wall full of bird and bat boxes and insect hotels to attract nature to the busy junction.

The site is currently a run-down car park used by commuters who have easy access to the Northern Line.

Next to it is a nine storey apartment block development at the former Spur House, currently under construction.

Neighbour Bill Cameron, of Milner Road, said: "It looks like something out of Planet of the Apes."

A spokesman from designers Planning and Development Associates said the flats could be for Wimbledon College of Arts students or medical pupils from St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

Mr Cameron said: "The idea is to make it an eco building.

"I’ve just spent £1,500 to scare off pigeons so the last thing I want is for birds to be in the area again.

"Where are the parking places going to come from?"

However Mr Cameron admits the area should be regenerated.

He added: "That car park is very run down and it has been for a while.

"This plan is very unbefitting for the area unless it is a tourist attraction."

A website detailing plans for the development said the halls of residence will be made up of ‘lightweight student housing units enclosed by a framework of living wall modules.’

The description said the lightweight modular nature of the construction allows for minimal structural impact on the existing site, which is important because of its proximity to the Underground.

As well as accommodation there would be a cafe fronting onto Morden Road.

There is no mention of car parking provision in the plan.

A public consultation was held on Friday, May 30 for residents to have their say on the plans.

A planning application to Merton Council is due to be submitted in the next few weeks.
