The 50th mayor for Merton was sworn in last night as former councillors bid goodbye to the chamber.

Newly elected representatives for wards across Merton were officially sworn in alongside Councillor Agatha Akyigyina, who takes over from Krystal Miller in the year-long role.

Ms Miller, who did not stand for re-election to Trinity ward, was recognised for her dedication and hard work in raising £45,000 for Home Start Merton and the Polka Theatre at the annual Merton Council meeting on Wednesday night.

Coun Akyigyina will support Shooting Star Chase children’s hospices, Merton Street Pastors, the Colour House Theatre and HPCT The Pilgrimage Trust.

Coun Akyigyina, of the Figge’s Marsh ward, said: "I am extremely proud to have been elected as the mayor of Merton and excited about the year ahead.

"During my time as mayor I will place a strong emphasis on celebrating the unsung heroes of the borough who work hard to make Merton a great place.

"My councillor colleagues and I are all deeply grateful for the excellent work of the outgoing mayor, Krystal Miller, who raised thousands of pounds for charities and did so much good work during her mayoralty."

Coun Laxmi Attawar was elected deputy mayor and will support the mayor in her duties this year.

Ms Miller said she thoroughly enjoyed her time as mayor and was honoured to represent Merton at many events over the past year.

She said: "I am pleased to have raised a large sum of money for charity and to have been able to thank many volunteers for their hard work throughout my mayoralty.

"I express my best wishes to Coun Akyigyina as Merton’s new mayor who I know will do a great job.

"I hope she enjoys every second and know she will have a rewarding year."

Newly elected councillors were sworn in at the meeting on Wednesday, June 4, at the Civic Offices in Morden.
