The historic windmill, New Wimbledon Theatre or the world-renowned tennis championships – what image best sums up Merton?
Young artists from across the borough submitted their answer to the question in an exhibition at Cannizaro House on May 20, the culmination of a competition created by estate agents Ellisons in honour of its 25th anniversary.
Such was the quantity and quality of the submissions, the company has promised to make the competition – which challenged primary and secondary schools to get involved with the chance to win £4,000 – an annual event.
Taking first prize at primary school level, and earning not only Priory School the cash but herself an iPad mini, was seven-year-old Lois Johnston for her image of Sophie Hosking’s golden postbox.
Laura Alfie, 12, of Ursuline School, collected the secondary school level prize for her drawing of Merton Abbey Mills.
The winning designs were chosen by members of Chelsea Arts Club and local artists Chris Townsend, Susie Prus and Emma van Klaveren Finlay.
