An MP has vowed to continue his fight to improve bus services - and get smoking banned in bus shelters.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake held a meeting with Transport for London (TfL) bosses where he called on them to extend the 154 service to make it run 24-hours-a-day and reinstate the X24 bus stop at The Plough in Beddington.

He also asked them to consider enforcing smoking band in bus shelters.

Mr Brake said: "This was a meeting I was very keen to have. Speaking to local residents and as a regular user of public transport myself, I completely understand their demands for improved 154 and X26 services.

"TfL assured me that nothing has been ruled out on the 154 and that they will be looking into the possibility of extending its hours of operation.

"Nothing is over, we will continue to fight for safer, convenient and more reliable local transport."

During the meeting, TfL announced that it will increase the frequency of the S1 service to four an hour from Monday to Saturday and three an hour on Sundays.

Mr Brake told TfL as 50 per cent of bus shelters are enclosed TfL should be able to enforce a smoking ban and put signs up.

He added: "They argue it’s too complicated, but TfL must consider what action they can take to reduce the devastating impact of second-hand smoke."
