Merton Priory is hosting an exhibition displaying eight artist’s works that has been inspired by the theme of ‘Rivers and Relics’.

The exhibition is to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Priory’s founding.

The priory was founded by Augustine Canons in 1114. It was moved onto the new site in 1117 because it was near the river Wandle for transport and they were able to start a fish farm.

The title Rivers and Relics relates to both its position and the 738 medieval remains found on the site during the most recent excavations in 1986 and 1990.

As well as the theme ‘River and Relics’ being in keeping with the Priory’s location by the River Wandle it is also an acknowledgement of the 738 medieval remains found during the most recent excavations in 1986 and 1990.
