The tragic death of Claudia Landa came just months after a pensioner almost suffered the same fate in the same spot.

Carmen Harrison, 97, of Carshalton Road, was on her way home from the fish and chip shop on November 26 last year, when she was struck by a vehicle at about 4pm.

It is understood she was crossing Carshalton Road, from the junction with Goat Road, to get to the bus stop.

She had 10 blood transfusions at St George's Hospital, Tooting, and was treated for a broken hip, broken collar bone and broken femur.

Her son, Henry Harrison, said: "Ever since I was a little kid when I used to go to SS Peter and Paul primary school, people have complained about that junction. There used to be an accident every single week.

"I have asked for traffic lights or a zebra crossing to be put there. Cars just shoot round the corner from Mitcham Junction.

"My mother recovered with the broken femur but now she's in a wheelchair and doesn't even recognise us. I've since come to terms with the fact I lost my mother on that day."

Other residents have joined the call for safety measures to be installed.

Veronica Frost, of Goat Road, said: "We are fed up of all these accidents. We had someone die outside our house three years ago, my dog got run over and a pensioner got hit crossing the road.

"This is not a one off, it happens quite regularly."

A spokeswoman for Merton Council said: "This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with Claudia’s family and friends at this time.

"The accident is currently being investigated by the police and once they have completed their report, we can get a better understanding of how this happened."
