A social club is being investigated by the council for hosting an illegal poker club.

The Royal Surrey Social Club in Abbotsbury Road, Morden, has been forced to stop providing poker as a result of council investigations supported by the Gambling Commission.

Tony Clark, manager of the Royal Surrey Social Club, said: "None of that happens now. It's got new ownership and new management.

"We sold all the poker tables and it's not something that's encouraged under the new ownership."

Under the Gambling Act 2005, commercial high-stakes poker is only legal in licensed casinos.

Poker can still be played in members' clubs, but there are various restrictions depending on whether there is a club gaming permit in place, conditions on participation fees and stake and prize limits.

The main purpose of the club also can not be gambling.

A spokesperson from Merton Council said: "The matter is still under investigation so we are unable to comment at this time."

The Royal Surrey Social Club was taken over by new owners in December 2013.
