Pupils from St Mark’s Church of England Academy in Merton were amongst the first cyclists in the world to enjoy pedalling around Lee Valley VeloPark at the official public launch of the London 2012 venue.
The young cyclists, who attended the launch alongside Olympic champion Laura Trott and Paralympic champion Mark Colbourne, were given specialist coaching on BMX, one of the four cycling disciplines available at the Olympic Park venue.
The session was hosted by British Cycling coaches as part of Go-Ride, British Cycling’s youth development programme for young people on Wednesday, March 12.
Scott Grant PE teacher at St Mark’s said: "It was an amazing experience for the students to have a go at cycling around a London 2012 venue.
"For some it was their first experience of this kind of cycling and I’m sure this will have inspired many of them to try cycling as a sport."
Lee Valley VeloPark includes the velodrome, remodelled Olympic BMX track, a one mile flood-lit road circuit and five miles of mountain biking trails.
It is the first venue in the world to bring these four forms of Olympic cycling activities together in one place.
Public sessions begin on Monday, March 31 and are available for everyone.
