This was the scene after a dramatic car crash in central Mitcham yesterday.

The Metropolitan Police helicopter was dispatched to the Mitcham Common area on Sunday, March 16, to find people they believed to be injured after a crash near Upper Green West in Mitcham.

Roads surrounding the incident were closed while police investigated.

The MPS helicopter landed in Mitcham town centre, in front of crowds of on-lookers.

A Twitter post from the team said: “All clear in Tower Hamlets, and now heading to search Mitcham Common for possibly injured persons after car crash on @MPSMerton.”

A short time later, the team said: “Thankfully no sign of anyone injured in Mitcham.”

The air ambulance helicopter was also called to the scene.

Funny how u say it was a dramatic crash. Maybe the guy that got him should never have stolen a box of chocolates from icelands, got seen and then chased out side. He choose to run across a busy round and in front of the car, of which that poor lady hit him. It was only one person. So tell me at what point did he get up a dump a car, coz the last thing I see was him being put into the back or an ambulance, no air ambulance was there at that point.

Looks like the air ambulance in the picture, not MPS (the latter attended briefly according to their twitter feed).

The air ambulance came after. There was only one car involved and that was the poor lady that hit the thief. Stop trying to make this story bigger then what it was. No police helicopter went by the common. I was in Mitcham by icelands when the guy got him. Managed to drive home before the road got close, and I live right by the common. Where have you got your information from??????

Once again the guardian reporters report utter nonsense , I wonder where they get there info from. Always quick to write reports without checking any of the facts out.

Road closures in Mitcham just after mid-day Sunday. Car in ditch around 11pm.
Separate incidents conflated in to one.
It just needed the reporter to check the tweet timelines on @MPSMerton and @MPSinthesky.
Not an onerous task.
