A seasoned marathon runner who collapsed during the gruelling challenge two years ago is preparing to tackle the Great North Run.

Caroline Linares, of Coombe Lane, Wimbledon collapsed from heat exhaustion and dehydration during the London Marathon in 2012, less than two miles from the finish, and had to be taken to University College of London Hospital.

The 35-year-old said: “Initially I felt fine and do not remember suffering any symptoms, my last memory was running through a tunnel.

She woke up in shock unable to control her body, feeling disorientated and unaware she was had been running the marathon.

She said: “I was incoherent and started to panic as I couldn’t control my body. I was shaking frantically and the volunteers worked together to try to cool me down with bags of ice and drinks to replenish my lost fluids.”

Mrs Linares has gone on to complete the London marathon last year, and now is preparing to take on the Great North Run in September in aid of St John Ambulance, the charity who were there to help her in her time of need.
