Food, music and poetry marked the launch of a charity drop-in service for the black and Asian community.

Mitcham library hosted Imagine Independence's launch event on Tuesday, with information on up-coming drop-in services to be held at the South Mitcham Community Centre in Haslemere Avenue.

The free advice service opened its doors the day after the launch, and will be held every Wednesday from 1pm to 3.30pm at the centre.

A wider-reaching floating support service, available throughout Merton, will offer individuals more intensive and home-based support, to include advocacy, peer support, living skills and travel training.

Service manager Laurie Sindoni said: "It was great, we had a lot of people join us for the launch party.

"There was music and food, and we gave out information to visitors."

Imagine Independence has been operating in Merton since 2009 in mental health service provision in the borough, having worked in close partnership with Jobcentre Plus, Merton Libraries, Rethink, Mind and the Community Mental Health teams.
