Dozens of visitors got together to view Wimbledon library's new look after months of refurbishment.

The deputy mayor of Merton, Councillor John Sargeant was on hand to unveil an historic photograph of Wimbledon Library from 1906 to mark the occasion.

The community day event on Wednesday, February 26, featured taster sessions including craft activities and health and fitness events for all ages.

Library users will now benefit from services including additional study space, extra computers and a free WiFi internet connection.

Among the visitors was Gerardina Ahmad, who has been a library member for 40 years.

Coun Sargeant said: "It was a real pleasure to visit the library and be part of this community day.

"I admire the improvements which the recent makeover has made to this much-loved building."

The refurbishment, which extended to a revamp of the children’s section, was made possible by investment from Merton Council.

Cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Nick Draper said: "The council has made Wimbledon an even better place to visit.

"It is testament to the fact that not only are all our libraries considered to be amongst the best in London, they are always improving and striving to meet the needs of the local community."
